Triggers for Youth
Triggers are events or situations that may cause an uncomfortable emotional or psychiatric symptom such as anxiety, anguish, panic, or negative self-talk. Reacting to triggers is normal, but if they aren’t identified or dealt with appropriately they may cause a downward spiral making the individual feel worse and worse.
Common triggers for youth include:
- The end of a relationship
- Spending too much time alone
- Being yelled at
- Being judged, criticized, teased, or put down
- Too much to do, feeling overwhelmed
- Being around someone who has treated you badly
- The anniversary dates of losses or trauma
